8 Foods You Should Never Reheat in the Microwave

The microwave is a convenient kitchen tool, but not all foods are safe or suitable for reheating this way. Here’s a list of eight items you should avoid microwaving to prevent mess, health risks, and even dangerous situations.

1. Whole Eggs

Reheating whole eggs in the microwave can be hazardous. Steam builds up inside the egg, which has no escape, causing a mini-explosion that can damage the microwave and pose a safety risk.

2. Grapes

Heating grapes in the microwave creates plasma, causing the berries to spark and potentially catch fire. The electrical charge that accumulates inside each grape can lead to dangerous sparking.

3. Breast Milk

It’s strongly discouraged to heat breast milk in the microwave. The uneven heating can destroy nutrients and create hot spots, which might scald a baby.

4. Vegetables Without Water

Vegetables, especially dry ones, lose moisture quickly in the microwave, which can lead to charring or even burning. For instance, heating chili peppers releases capsaicin into the air, irritating the eyes and respiratory tract.

5. Frozen Meat

Defrosting meat in the microwave often leads to uneven cooking, with the outer layers starting to cook while the center remains frozen, encouraging bacterial growth.

6. Food in Metal Containers

Metal containers, foil, or packaging with metallic elements can cause sparking in the microwave, potentially damaging the appliance or even igniting a fire.

7. Herbs and Dried Spices

Dried herbs can lose their flavor and nutritional benefits when microwaved. Additionally, they may begin to smolder, resulting in an unpleasant odor and taste.

8. Oil-Rich Sauces

Oily sauces can separate in the microwave, losing their texture and possibly “exploding,” with hot droplets that could cause burns when opening the microwave.
