A Sleep Specialist Shares How to Avoid Sudden Awakenings and Insomnia

Many adults struggle with sleep difficulties, largely due to the fast-paced nature of modern life and chronic stress, which disrupts sleep for many urban residents. However, doctors advise against rushing to medication as a first solution. Instead, it’s essential to attempt self-management techniques. According to medical experts, resolving these problems is often easier than it seems.

One of the most common complaints to sleep specialists is difficulty falling asleep. Medical professionals emphasize that correcting bedtime routines and preparing properly for sleep can help prevent such issues. Recently, however, more individuals have been facing a different and more challenging problem: waking up suddenly during the night.

Many people experience abrupt awakenings in the middle of the night, after which falling back asleep seems impossible. Despite the body’s clear need for rest, returning to sleep can be elusive, often prompting individuals to reach for medication.

Dave Asprey, a health expert and journalist, shared in his blog about healthy lifestyle practices. He confessed that he, too, suffered from sudden awakenings, which severely impacted his life. Asprey frequently woke up feeling exhausted and eventually realized that his poor quality of sleep was the root cause. Determined to understand the issue, he delved into potential reasons behind these nighttime disturbances.

Asprey explained in his blog that recent research suggests sudden blood sugar spikes are often to blame. Hormonal fluctuations that trigger abrupt glucose increases can wake a person up during the night.

The solution, he says, may be as simple as adjusting one’s diet. Asprey advises avoiding sugary snacks before bedtime. Eliminating fruits, baked goods, and confectionery items at least two hours before sleep can prevent interruptions and promote restful sleep.
