Apple Introduces New Feature to Combat iPhone Theft and Stolen Parts in iOS 18

Apple is introducing a new feature in iOS 18 to combat theft and unauthorized use of iPhone components. This update includes the ability to remotely lock iPhones if they are found to have stolen parts installed, such as batteries or displays. This security feature was discovered by a user, BetaProfiles, in the iOS 18 Release Candidate (RC) build.

If an iPhone is fitted with a stolen component, such as a battery, a message will appear on the screen reading “Battery Locked to Owner”. This applies not only to batteries but also to other key components like the display and camera. By tying these parts to the owner’s Apple account, Apple aims to make it more difficult to reuse stolen iPhone parts.

Apple explained that this feature was developed in response to requests from customers and law enforcement agencies, with the goal of preventing the reactivation of stolen or lost iPhones. This function is expected to be available on all devices receiving the iOS 18 update.

This new initiative strengthens Apple’s already robust anti-theft mechanisms and offers further protection for iPhone users against illegal part replacement.
