Dangerous Habits Drivers Should Avoid in Winter

Winter driving conditions, including frost, snow, and ice, significantly complicate vehicle control. Certain habits can make these challenges even riskier, increasing the likelihood of accidents. To stay safe on the road this winter, it’s essential to avoid the following behaviors:

Adopting the Wrong Driving Style

Aggressive driving is hazardous even in ideal weather, but it becomes especially dangerous during snowstorms or on icy roads. Drivers must avoid rapid acceleration, sudden braking, and other risky maneuvers. Instead, adopt a cautious driving style, maintain steady speeds, and leave ample space between vehicles.

Driving Without Clearing Snow and Ice

Before hitting the road, thoroughly clean your car. Remove snow from the roof and hood to prevent it from obstructing your view or falling onto other vehicles. Clear all ice and frost from the windows and mirrors to ensure maximum visibility. Never rely on the idea that snow or ice will “blow off” while driving, as this can lead to dangerous conditions for you and others.

Wearing Unsuitable Clothing and Footwear

Bulky clothing and heavy footwear can impair driving. Oversized boots may make it harder to operate the pedals, while restrictive clothing can limit movement, making steering more difficult. Additionally, some headwear can reduce peripheral vision.

To stay comfortable and safe:

  • Warm up your vehicle thoroughly before driving.
  • Remove unnecessary outer layers.
  • Consider having a set of comfortable, lightweight shoes specifically for driving.

By addressing these common mistakes, drivers can enhance their safety on the road and reduce the risk of winter-related accidents.
