Everyone has their preferred way of making coffee—some rely on smart coffee machines, others stick to the classic method of brewing in a cezve (or “turka”), while some simply pour hot water over ground beans. But it turns out that the trick to making great coffee isn’t necessarily about the method but rather in paying attention to the finer details that not everyone considers.
Here’s how to brew coffee the right way.
Brewing Coffee at Home
To fully unlock the flavor and aroma of your coffee, it’s essential to focus on the coffee-to-water ratio, the amount of water, and its temperature.
The formula is neither secret nor complex: for one cup of coffee, use 18 grams of ground coffee and 300 ml of water. This precise measurement allows the coffee to develop a rich, balanced taste.
The Importance of Water Quality and Temperature
Another critical factor is the quality and temperature of the water.
- Water Quality: Use soft water for the best results, ideally filtered water, to avoid unwanted minerals that can alter the taste of your coffee.
- Water Temperature: The water should be heated to around 88-92°C (190-198°F). Water that’s too hot can scorch the coffee grounds, leading to a bitter taste, while water that’s too cool will under-extract, resulting in a weak, flat flavor.
Putting It All Together
Once you have the right coffee-to-water ratio, filtered water, and the ideal temperature, you’re ready to brew. Whether you prefer to pour hot water directly over the grounds or use a machine, remember that these small details—rather than the brewing method itself—will make a big difference in flavor.
Happy brewing!
