Infidelity is Inevitable: Scientists Reveal the Relationship Dynamics That Lead to Cheating

Most breakups could potentially be prevented.

When evaluating the likelihood of infidelity in a potential partner, many women focus on learning about their partner’s past relationships. Psychologists also suggest examining the dynamics of the partner’s parents’ marriage. If infidelity occurred in their relationship, it could leave a lasting impression on their child’s behavior patterns.

While these factors are important to consider before committing to a serious relationship, recent research suggests that infidelity isn’t solely rooted in past patterns. In fact, cheating can often be avoided if the right conditions aren’t created within the relationship itself.

Gurit Birnbaum, a psychology professor at Reichman University, has been studying romantic relationships for years. According to her, infidelity causes profound psychological pain and destroys a significant percentage of partnerships. This motivated her team to investigate the root causes of cheating.

Research Findings on Infidelity

Through a series of experiments involving dozens of couples, researchers uncovered a key distinction in cheating partners. Individuals who take the lead in relationships—making decisions and assuming most of the responsibility for their partner—are more prone to infidelity.

As soon as someone perceives themselves as the dominant force in the relationship, their outlook on intimacy, flirting, and seeking new partners shifts. Birnbaum explained, “This power dynamic in romantic relationships can make the more responsible partner feel like they are contributing more than their counterpart.”

The Danger of Romanticizing Dominance

The study warns against the tendency to romanticize relationships where one partner takes complete control. While it may seem appealing to some women to have a partner who handles all decisions, this dynamic creates fertile ground for infidelity.

The perception of unequal effort within the relationship can lead the dominant partner to seek validation elsewhere, increasing the likelihood of cheating.

Conclusion

Infidelity is not always inevitable, but understanding the dynamics that foster it is crucial for building healthy, lasting relationships. By striving for balance and mutual respect, couples can create environments that reduce the risks of betrayal and nurture stronger bonds.
