Communication with such a person is best avoided.
Relationships with a narcissist are something every woman would prefer to steer clear of. Unfortunately, many have encountered such individuals. Romances with narcissists often begin beautifully, as they are masters of charming those around them. According to psychologists, emotionally healthy individuals often find it hard to compete with narcissists in the art of seduction. However, once the narcissist senses that their victim is in love, they reveal their true nature, leading to painful and damaging relationships.
Delroy Paulhus, a researcher in personality psychology, has been studying narcissists for decades. He developed various testing methods used by law enforcement to analyze individuals accused of violent crimes. Paulhus also created a simple questionnaire called the “Dark Triad” consisting of 29 questions, which anyone can use to assess narcissistic tendencies.
While this tool can be useful if you’ve known someone for a while and suspect narcissism, it’s not as helpful for new acquaintances. However, Paulhus believes there are clear signs you can detect from the very first conversation with a narcissist.
Key Indicators:
- Lack of Genuine Emotions: Narcissists typically do not experience deep emotions, which is why they can be so captivating at first. They often say exactly what their conversation partner wants to hear, but their responses lack sincerity. Instead, they mimic or predict others’ behavior because they are not truly engaged on an emotional level.
- Frequent Interruptions: Narcissists often interrupt others during conversations. They may even apologize for doing so, but they’ll ensure that the conversation remains centered on them. They see themselves as the most interesting person in any room and have little interest in discussing others.
- Seeking Power and Influence: Narcissists are always on the lookout for the most influential person in a group and will immediately try to establish a connection with them. Casual, enjoyable socializing is not their goal; they are driven by self-interest and the desire to align with power.
Being able to identify these traits early can help avoid falling into manipulative and harmful relationships with narcissistic individuals.
