Secrets of Longevity from Emma Morano

Italian woman Emma Morano, who lived to the age of 117, shared two main secrets that she believed contributed to her long and healthy life.

Embracing Solitude

Emma chose to remain single for most of her life after experiencing personal hardships. She believed that solitude allowed her to find inner harmony, avoid stress, and maintain her peace of mind.

For Emma, being alone was a blessing that let her focus on herself and her well-being.

Modern studies support the idea that spending time alone can reduce stress, improve mental health, and boost self-confidence. Solitude doesn’t have to be a burden—it can be a valuable time for self-reflection and personal growth.

A Unique Diet

Emma followed an unconventional diet for nearly 100 years. Her daily meals mostly consisted of three eggs—two raw eggs for breakfast and an omelet for lunch. In her later years, she reduced her intake to two eggs per day but maintained her habit.

This dietary choice began in her youth when doctors recommended eggs to combat anemia.

Emma also enjoyed a small daily serving of homemade grappa, an Italian grape-based spirit infused with herbs and spices.

Science on Eggs and Longevity

While a mono-diet like Emma’s is not generally recommended, the nutritional benefits of eggs are undeniable.

Eggs are rich in high-quality protein, vitamins (A, D, E, and B-complex), and essential minerals like iron, zinc, and selenium. The lecithin in egg yolks supports brain health and liver function, while choline aids memory and nervous system health.

Contrary to common myths:

  • Moderate egg consumption (2-3 per day) does not increase harmful cholesterol levels and may help maintain healthy blood lipid balance.
  • Eggs are low in calories and high in protein, making them an excellent choice for weight management.
  • They do not negatively affect hormone levels but provide building blocks for the body’s natural hormone production.

Science has largely debunked concerns about eggs, making them a highly nutritious and versatile food when consumed in moderation.

Emma’s simple yet disciplined approach to life—embracing solitude and maintaining a consistent, nutrient-rich diet—provides valuable lessons for anyone seeking a healthier and potentially longer life.
