What Not to Wash in the Washing Machine

Washing machines are a gift of modern technology, making laundry chores significantly easier. However, not everything can be safely tossed into this convenient appliance. Here are some items you should avoid washing in the machine to prevent damage to both your belongings and the machine itself.

1. Delicate Fabrics

Items made from silk, lace, or intricate lace should be hand washed or sent to the dry cleaners. The agitation and spinning in a washing machine can easily tear or damage these delicate materials.

2. Shoes

While some sneakers are machine washable, others can be easily ruined. Leather shoes, for example, can warp and lose their shape when exposed to water and the harsh conditions of a wash cycle.

3. Items with Decorative Details

Any clothing with embellishments, such as sequins, beads, or other decorative items, should be washed carefully. The washing machine can cause these decorations to fall off, ruining the clothing’s appearance.

4. Large Items

Many washing machines aren’t equipped to handle bulky items like comforters or blankets. Overloading the machine can lead to ineffective cleaning and even mechanical issues. It is best to wash these items in larger, commercial machines.

5. Underwired Bras

Washing bras with underwires in a machine can lead to bent or broken wires. Always opt for hand washing or use a lingerie bag designed for machine washing.

6. Wool and Cashmere

Natural fibers like wool and cashmere can shrink or felt when washed in hot water or agitated. It’s advisable to either hand wash these items or use a gentle cycle with cold water if the care label allows.

7. Certain Home Textiles

Some home textiles, including certain types of curtains or decorative pillows, may not be suitable for machine washing. Always check the label for cleaning instructions before laundering.

Taking the time to read care labels and understanding the limitations of your washing machine can save you from costly mistakes. By avoiding these common laundry pitfalls, you’ll keep your items looking new and extend their life.
